New Areas identified for Telephone Service in 2006

With the finalization of the 2006 work programme and the securing of funding to continue rolling out telephone service to several communities across the length and breadth of the country, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company is poised to put continue installing several thousand new fixed lines services around the country.

Among the areas identified for new service installations in 2006 are Enterprise, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Vreed-en-Hoop, West Bank Demerara (WBD) which will also cover the villages of Pouderoyen and Goed Fortuin, Beterverwagting West and Central ECD, Houston East Bank Demerara (EBD), Brighton; Corentyne Berbice, Sophia and the GT&T installation at CRS Thomaslands.

Other areas slated for service in 2006 are Belladrum, West Coast Berbice (WCB), Grove, EBD which will see residents particularly those in newly regularized communities of Diamond/Grove Housing Scheme gaining telephone service, No. 34 Village, Corentyne and Canvas City/Wismar in the mining town of Linden.

These apart, new fixed line service build out are also slated for areas in the city including Kingston/Cummingsburg, Queenstown/Bourda/Stabroek, and Kitty/Subryanville/Bel Air.

Residents at Linden, specifically at Christianburg, as well at those at Vigilance, Non Pariel, Enmore, Clonbrook and Cove and John ECD, will also have increased access to telephone services in their communities.

Apart from this extensive build out agenda, the Company will also be concentrating its efforts on completing projects rolled over from its 2005 programme including service to Land of Canaan, EBD, Massiah, No. 65 village and Adventure along the Corentyne Berbice coast.

Other areas rolled over from the 2005 programme are Catherine, Planters Hall, Bachelor’s Adventure, Melanie, Cane Grove and Grove ECD.

Work has already commended on some of the abovementioned projects most of which were delayed due to several issues including that of the flooding which inundated large areas of the ECD, problems with the acquisition of real estate to complete build out and the timely arrival of equipment to facilitate completion of the work.

Meanwhile apart from the deployment of these new fixed line services to these areas, GT&T is also gearing to continue its programme to see more remote communities having access to telephone service via the Rural Remote Radio installation.

Having cleared several areas with the regulatory body the Public Utilities Commission recently, the Company will soon embark on new deployment to several remote communities which by their position are far removed from those areas where currently are being serviced by wire line.
