Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company presents DSL service to National Library

The Company has presented the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service to the national Library with the hope that students in particular using the Library will benefit from speed made available through the technology.

The service was provided to the library for use by students and the general public for research purposes. The Digital Subscriber Line Service (DSL) provides faster download and upload speed, is an always on connection and allows the flexibility of use of the telephone while online.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Library, Mrs. Carmen Jarvis said that the traditional role of the Library was to promote books and reading to promote literacy. The new facility would now take the library a step further by promoting information technology literacy. She pointed out that the donation is significant in this the start of the declared United Nations Decade of Literacy.

General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the GT&T, Ms. Sonita Jagan, said that the focus of the company was to give continued support to educational institutions and education in Guyana. This presentation, she said, was the first of many since it is the company’s intention to “move into schools throughout Guyana”. She said that the service would be provided to students free of cost. The company will soon provide the library with a computer timing software device to be used in the timing administration of the DSL service.

Chief Librarian, Mrs. Karen George expressed her gratitude for GT&T’s assistance in bringing the Library up to date with libraries in sister Caricom countries. She hoped that the service would become available to libraries in rural communities in the future.

The presentation was witnessed by students, members of the public, GT&T staff and national library officials.
